IELTS Band 7 Study Plan
Band 7 means handling complex English with only occasional errors. This plan shows what to prioritise in each skill and how to practise so band 7 becomes realistic.
Diagnose first
Take one full practice test to get a baseline band in each skill. Almost everyone is stronger in Listening/Reading and weaker in Writing/Speaking — put most of your effort where the gap to 7 is largest.
Skill priorities for band 7
- Listening/Reading: master question types, then do timed tests and study every error.
- Writing: learn essay structure, fix your top grammar errors, and get feedback on real essays.
- Speaking: practise speaking daily, extend answers, and record yourself to hear pauses and errors.
A weekly rhythm
- One full timed practice test.
- Two Writing tasks with self-review against the band descriptors.
- Daily Speaking practice (10–15 min) and daily English listening/reading.
- A weekly error review to spot patterns.
Feedback is the multiplier for Writing and Speaking. You cannot reliably mark these yourself, so get expert feedback — it is the single fastest way to reach band 7.

How long does it take to go from band 6 to 7?+
With focused daily practice, many candidates improve by half a band in 4–8 weeks. Progress is fastest when you target your specific weaknesses rather than practising everything equally.
What holds people back from band 7?+
Usually underdeveloped Writing Task 2 essays, repeated grammar errors, and not fully answering the question. Fixing these lifts most candidates from 6 to 7.
