IELTS Common Grammar Mistakes
A handful of repeated grammar errors keep many candidates stuck at band 6. Identifying and fixing your top few is the fastest route to a higher band.
The most common errors
| Error | Wrong | Right |
|---|---|---|
| Articles | She is student. | She is a student. |
| Subject–verb agreement | The government are… | The government is… |
| Prepositions | depend of | depend on |
| Countable/uncountable | many informations | much information |
| Tense consistency | He study and passed | He studied and passed |
How to fix them for good
- Keep an error log of every mistake a teacher or checker finds.
- Group them — most people have just three or four recurring error types.
- Drill those specific rules and re-check them in every practice essay.
Leave two minutes at the end of Writing to proofread specifically for your known errors (articles, endings, agreement). This alone can save a whole band.
