Spelling questions ask you to pick the correctly spelt word from four near-identical options. Indian competitive exams recycle a short list of habitually misspelt words — double consonants, -ence versus -ance, and silent letters account for almost all of them. Learning the twenty worst offenders is enough for most papers.

Spelling— Concepts, Formulas & Shortcuts

  • Double-consonant traps: accommodation (cc + mm), occurrence (cc + rr), embarrass (rr + ss), committee (mm + tt).
  • -ence vs -ance: existence, persistence, occurrence take -ence; maintenance, appearance, resistance take -ance.
  • "Separate" has an 'a' in the middle — think "there is A RAT in sepARATe".
  • Silent letters: privilege (no d), government (n before m), February (first r), mischievous (no extra i).
  • -cede / -ceed: only succeed, proceed and exceed use -ceed; the rest use -cede.
  • When two options differ by a single letter, that letter is the whole question — check it directly.
