Sentence Formation— Concepts, Formulas & Shortcuts

  • Standard English order: Subject → Verb → Object → Manner → Place → Time.
  • Find the part containing the subject first; it usually begins the sentence.
  • An article (a, an, the) always attaches to the noun that follows it — they cannot be separated.
  • Infinitives ("to go", "to the station") and prepositional phrases stay intact as a unit.
  • Auxiliary verbs (is, are, has, will) sit immediately before the main verb.
  • Read your final sequence aloud in your head — a correct sentence will feel complete, not merely plausible.

What is the standard English word order?+

Subject, then verb, then object, followed by manner, place and time in that sequence. "I went to the station by taxi yesterday" follows it exactly.

Which part should I place first?+

The one containing the subject — the person or thing performing the action. Locking that in immediately eliminates most of the answer options.
