Change of Voice— Concepts, Formulas & Shortcuts
- Active → Passive: object becomes subject, verb becomes (correct form of be) + past participle, subject moves to "by …".
- The TENSE never changes: writes → is written, wrote → was written, has written → has been written.
- Continuous tenses take "being": is building → is being built.
- Imperatives become "Let + object + be + past participle": Open the door → Let the door be opened.
- Questions keep their question form: Who broke it? → By whom was it broken?
- The "by" phrase is dropped when the doer is unknown or unimportant: My bag has been stolen.
