Cloze Test — Questions and Answers

A Cloze Test removes several words from a short passage and asks you to restore them. Unlike isolated fill-in-the-blanks, every blank must fit the surrounding argument as well as the grammar — so read the whole passage once before filling anything, and use the connectors to decide whether the missing word should agree with or contradict the preceding idea.

Cloze Test— Concepts, Formulas & Shortcuts

  • Read the entire passage once before attempting any blank; later sentences often decide earlier ones.
  • Identify the part of speech the blank needs before you look at the options.
  • Contrast markers (but, however, although) mean the missing word opposes the previous idea.
  • Continuation markers (moreover, furthermore, and) mean it supports the previous idea.
  • Keep the tense and the number consistent with the rest of the passage.
  • Do the easy blanks first — each one you fill narrows the meaning of the harder blanks.

Cloze Test — Frequently Asked Questions

Should I fill the blanks in order?+

No. Fill the ones you are sure of first. Every confirmed blank tightens the context and makes the remaining ones easier, whereas guessing early can lock you into the wrong reading.

How do connectors help in a cloze test?+

They tell you the direction of the argument. "However" signals that the missing idea reverses the previous one, while "moreover" signals that it extends it — often that alone eliminates three options.
