Ordering of Words — Questions and Answers

Ordering of Words scrambles four individual words and asks for the sequence that forms a meaningful sentence. It is the word-level twin of Sentence Formation, and the same rule applies: identify the subject, attach the auxiliary and main verb, then the object or complement.

Ordering of Words— Concepts, Formulas & Shortcuts

  • Determiners (the, this, my) come immediately before their noun.
  • Auxiliary before main verb: has been, is playing, must study.
  • Adverbs of frequency (never, always, often) sit before the main verb but after "be".
  • Infinitive "to" always attaches to the verb that follows it.
  • Adjectives precede the noun they describe.
  • Verify by reading the assembled sentence — a wrong order produces something that is nearly right but not idiomatic.

Ordering of Words — Frequently Asked Questions

Where do adverbs like 'never' go?+

Before the main verb but after the verb "to be": "He never tells lies" but "He is never late".

How do I handle determiners in these questions?+

Treat determiner + noun as an inseparable block. "The" cannot end a sentence or stand alone, so it must sit directly before whichever noun is in the set.
