IELTS Writing Task 1
IELTS Writing Task 1 Describing Graphs and Charts
For Academic Task 1 you must describe the key features of a chart and make comparisons — not list every number. This lesson gives you the structure and the language of trends.
A reliable four-paragraph structure
- Introduction — paraphrase what the chart shows (do not copy the question).
- Overview — describe the 2–3 biggest trends or most striking features (no numbers needed here).
- Body 1 — detail the first group of data with specific figures.
- Body 2 — detail the rest, making comparisons.
The overview paragraph is the single most important part for band 7+. Examiners look specifically for a clear statement of the main trends.
Language of trends
| Movement | Verbs | Nouns |
|---|---|---|
| Up | rose, increased, climbed, surged | a rise, an increase, growth |
| Down | fell, declined, dropped, plummeted | a fall, a decline, a drop |
| Steady | remained stable, levelled off, plateaued | stability, a plateau |
| Change | fluctuated, peaked, bottomed out | a fluctuation, a peak |
Adverbs and adjectives for degree
Combine trend words with degree words: "increased sharply / significantly / gradually / slightly", or "a sharp increase / a gradual rise". This variety lifts your Lexical Resource score.

Do I need to include all the numbers in Task 1?+
No. Select and group the most important figures to support your key features. Listing every number without comparison lowers your Task Achievement score.
What is the overview in IELTS Task 1?+
The overview is a short paragraph summarising the main trends or most notable features without detailed data. It is essential for band 6 and above.
