IELTS Listening Tips and Strategies
Small habits separate a band 6 from a band 8 in Listening. This lesson gives you the strategies that consistently lift scores.
Before and during the audio
- Use every pause to read the next set of questions and underline keywords.
- Predict the type of answer expected (number, name, noun) so your ear is ready.
- Follow the questions in order — they come in the same order as the audio.
- If you miss one, let it go instantly and lock onto the next question.
Build the skill
- Listen to English podcasts, TED talks and news for a range of accents daily.
- Practise "dictation": replay a clip and write exactly what you hear.
- Always review wrong answers — was it spelling, a distractor, or a missed keyword?
Never leave a blank. Even if unsure, write your best guess — there is no negative marking in IELTS.

How can I improve IELTS Listening quickly?+
Do timed practice tests, then study every mistake. Combine this with 20–30 minutes of daily English listening (podcasts, news) to train your ear to different accents.
Should I write answers in capital letters?+
Writing answers in capitals is a safe habit on paper IELTS because it avoids unclear handwriting and capitalisation errors.
