IELTS Listening
IELTS Listening Common Mistakes
Most lost Listening marks come from a handful of avoidable mistakes. Fix these and your score often jumps half a band or more.
The mistakes that cost bands
- Exceeding the word limit — writing three words when "NO MORE THAN TWO" is allowed scores zero.
- Spelling and grammar errors in otherwise correct answers.
- Falling for distractors — noting the first number/word instead of the corrected one.
- Losing focus after a missed answer and then missing the next one too.
- Transfer errors — copying answers to the sheet in the wrong row (paper test).
Read instructions for every task separately — the word limit can change between question groups within the same section.
The fix
Keep a personal error log. After each practice test, tag every mistake as spelling, word-limit, distractor, or focus. Within a few tests you will see one or two patterns causing most losses — target those directly.

Do plurals matter in IELTS Listening?+
Yes. If the answer is plural (e.g. "tickets") and you write the singular, it is marked wrong. Listen carefully for the -s and check that grammar fits the sentence.
Is capitalisation marked in Listening?+
Generally answers are accepted in upper or lower case, but proper nouns are safest capitalised. Spelling, however, must be correct.
