IELTS Basics
IELTS Academic vs General Training
IELTS comes in two versions — Academic and General Training. Listening and Speaking are identical in both; only the Reading and Writing sections differ. Choosing the correct version is essential, so this lesson makes the difference clear.
IELTS Academic
Take IELTS Academic if you are applying to a university or higher-education course, or for professional registration (for example, medical or nursing councils). The Reading passages are drawn from books, journals and magazines, and Writing Task 1 asks you to describe a graph, chart, table or diagram.
IELTS General Training
Take IELTS General Training for work experience, secondary education, or migration to Australia, Canada, the UK or New Zealand. The Reading uses everyday materials such as notices, advertisements and company handbooks, and Writing Task 1 asks you to write a letter.
Key differences at a glance

| Writing Task 1 | Describe a graph/chart/diagram | Write a letter |
| Writing Task 2 | Essay (formal) | Essay (slightly less formal) |
| Speaking | Same | Same |
Always confirm which version your university or visa route requires before booking. Booking the wrong version means paying again and sitting the whole test a second time.

Is General Training easier than Academic?+
The Reading and Writing tasks in General Training use more everyday language, which many candidates find more approachable, but the band requirements for migration can still be high. Neither is universally "easier" — it depends on your strengths.
Which IELTS do I need for a UK student visa?+
For a university degree you normally need IELTS Academic (often UKVI Academic). Always check the specific requirement on your CAS/offer letter.
