IELTS Test Day Guide

Test-day nerves cost bands. This lesson walks you through exactly what happens on IELTS test day so you arrive prepared, relaxed and focused.

What to bring

  • The same valid passport or national ID you used to register — this is essential.
  • Your confirmation/booking details.
  • For paper-based tests: pencils, an eraser and a pen (check your centre’s rules).
  • Nothing else — phones, watches, notes and bags are stored outside the exam room.

What to expect

  1. Arrive early; latecomers may be refused entry.
  2. Identity and photo verification before you enter.
  3. Listening, Reading and Writing completed in one sitting.
  4. A short Speaking interview on the same day or within 7 days.
⚠️

You cannot take your own paper into the room. In Listening, read the questions in the pauses the recording gives you, and transfer answers carefully if you are on paper.

Staying calm and scoring well

Sleep well the night before, eat a proper meal, and do a light warm-up such as reading an English article aloud. During the test, if a question is hard, mark it and move on — never let one question eat time you need for the rest.
