A trusted route to undergraduate admissions in the USA
American College Testing

The ACT (American College Testing) is a standardised college-admissions test widely accepted by universities in the United States as an alternative to the SAT. Administered by ACT, it assesses students’ readiness for college across English, Mathematics, Reading and Science, with an optional Writing (essay) section.
The ACT is now offered in digital and paper formats, and recent updates have made the core test shorter with a more streamlined structure — the Science section is optional in newer formats, letting students focus on the subjects that matter most for their applications. Each subject is scored 1–36, and your composite is the average of the required sections.
For Indian students applying for a Bachelor’s degree in the USA (and some other countries), a strong ACT score (typically 30+ out of 36) strengthens applications and scholarship prospects. With coaching on time management, subject content and the unique Science-reasoning section, students can significantly raise their composite.
Who can appear for the ACT exam and what you need before you book.
Section-wise structure, question types and timing for the ACT.
| Section | What it tests | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| English | Grammar, usage, punctuation and rhetorical skills across passages. | ≈ 35 min |
| Mathematics | Algebra, geometry, trigonometry and data analysis; calculator permitted. | ≈ 50 min |
| Reading | Comprehension of prose fiction, social science, humanities and natural science passages. | ≈ 40 min |
| Science (optional) | Interpretation, analysis and reasoning with data, experiments and conflicting viewpoints. | ≈ 40 min |
Each section is scored from 1 to 36, and the composite score is the average of the required sections (rounded to the nearest whole number). A composite of 30+ is competitive for good universities; 33+ is strong for top-ranked schools. The optional Writing test is scored separately (2–12). There is no negative marking.
The ACT is offered internationally on around 5–7 dates per year (typically September, October, December, February, April and June). Digital ACT results are released faster than paper. Register early, as India test-centre seats are limited.
The ACT costs roughly $100 or more for international students including the international service fee; the optional Writing test adds a small charge. Confirm current fees on the official ACT website.
ACT scores are valid for 5 years and can be sent to universities anytime through your ACT account. Plan your test 12–18 months before your intended intake so you have room for a retake.

A composite of 30+ (out of 36) is competitive for good universities, and 33+ is strong for top-ranked schools. Aim for the middle-50% range of your target universities.
Both are accepted equally by US universities. The ACT includes a Science-reasoning section and is more time-pressured, while the SAT is fully digital and adaptive. We run a diagnostic on both so you can pick the test that plays to your strengths.
In newer ACT formats the Science section is optional, letting you focus on English, Math and Reading. If your target programmes value it (e.g. STEM), we recommend taking it — our coaching covers the reasoning strategy.
Most students prepare for 2–3 months. With structured coaching and full-length mocks, you can raise your composite by several points, especially by improving pacing.
Up to 12 times. Universities often superscore, combining your best section scores across dates, so strategic retakes can lift your reported composite.
