The preferred English test for studying in the USA and beyond
Test of English as a Foreign Language

The TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a globally recognised English-proficiency test owned by ETS, accepted by 12,000+ universities and institutions across 160+ countries. It is especially favoured by universities in the USA and is a strong choice for students applying to North American undergraduate and graduate programmes.
The TOEFL iBT is an internet-based test that measures all four skills — Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing — in a single, streamlined sitting of under 2 hours. Speaking responses are recorded and scored by a combination of AI and certified human raters, ensuring a fair, academic-focused assessment.
A strong TOEFL score (typically 90–100+ out of 120) makes your application competitive for good universities, and 100+ is ideal for top-ranked schools. With coaching on academic reading, note-taking for listening, and templated speaking/writing responses, most students improve steadily.
Who can appear for the TOEFL exam and what you need before you book.
Section-wise structure, question types and timing for the TOEFL.
| Section | What it tests | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | 2 academic passages, ~20 questions — comprehension, vocabulary and inference. | ≈ 35 min |
| Listening | Lectures and conversations with note-taking; comprehension and detail questions. | ≈ 36 min |
| Speaking | 4 tasks — one independent and three integrated; responses recorded and scored. | ≈ 16 min |
| Writing | Integrated task + a "Writing for an Academic Discussion" task. | ≈ 29 min |
Each of the four sections is scored 0–30, for a total of 0–120. A score of 90–100 is competitive for most universities, while top-ranked programmes often ask for 100–110+. Speaking and Writing use AI plus certified human raters. There is no negative marking.
The TOEFL iBT is offered on 60+ dates per year at test centres across India, plus the at-home TOEFL iBT Home Edition available almost around the clock. Official scores are typically available in about 4–8 days in your ETS account.
The TOEFL iBT costs approximately $200–$210 in India (around ₹16,500 or more). Late registration and additional score reports carry extra fees. Confirm the current fee on the official ETS website.
TOEFL iBT scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. You can send scores to up to four institutions for free on test day and order additional reports later.
