IELTS True False Not Given

True/False/Not Given is the question type that confuses candidates most. The key is the precise difference between "False" and "Not Given". This lesson makes it clear.

What each answer means

AnswerMeaning
TrueThe statement agrees with the information in the text.
FalseThe statement contradicts the information in the text.
Not GivenThe text neither confirms nor contradicts the statement.

The trap: "False" means the text actively disagrees with the statement. "Not Given" means the information simply is not there. If you cannot find evidence either way, the answer is Not Given — do not use outside knowledge or assumptions.

A reliable method

  1. Read the statement and underline the key idea (not just keywords).
  2. Scan the passage for the paraphrased location of that idea.
  3. Ask: does the text state the same thing (True), the opposite (False), or say nothing about it (Not Given)?
  4. Decide quickly and move on — do not overthink Not Given answers.
⚠️

Yes/No/Not Given works the same way but is used for the writer’s opinions or claims rather than facts. The logic is identical.

Never. Answer only from what the passage says. Using outside knowledge is the most common cause of wrong answers here.
