IELTS Speaking Part 1
Part 1 warms you up with familiar questions about your life. The goal is to answer naturally and extend each answer with a reason or example — not one-word replies.
Common Part 1 topics
- Home and accommodation
- Work or studies
- Hometown
- Hobbies and free time
- Food, weather, travel, technology
How to answer
Give a direct answer, then extend it with a reason, an example or a contrast. Two to three sentences per question is ideal — long enough to show fluency, short enough to keep the conversation moving.
Yes, I really enjoy it, especially at the weekend when I have more time. I find chopping vegetables quite relaxing after a busy week, and I love experimenting with new recipes I find online — last month I learned to make Thai green curry from scratch.Avoid one-word answers ("Yes." / "No.") and avoid memorised speeches. Examiners spot rehearsed answers instantly and it lowers your fluency score.

How long should Part 1 answers be?+
Two to three sentences. Answer the question, then add a reason or example so you show range without rambling.
Can I ask the examiner to repeat a question?+
Yes, politely asking for repetition is fine and natural. It does not lower your score, unlike frequent long silences.
