HTML Tag

The tag renders text in bold to draw attention, without conveying any extra importance or emphasis.

What is the tag?

The element represents a span of text to which attention is drawn for utilitarian purposes, without implying that it is more important. Typical uses include keywords, product names, or the lead sentence of an article. By default browsers display content in bold.

Complete example

The Betterwork platform lists thousands of internships.

Enter your full name and email to apply.

versus

is purely stylistic bold text with no added meaning, whereas marks text as having strong importance, seriousness, or urgency, and screen readers may announce it differently. Use when the emphasis is meaningful, and only when you want bold styling for stylistic reasons.

💡

For genuinely emphasised or important text, prefer semantic elements: for importance and for stress emphasis. Reserve for bold styling with no semantic weight.

The tag is an inline element supported in all browsers.
