Seating Arrangement— Concepts, Formulas & Shortcuts
- Draw the frame before reading the clues — a row of n dashes, or a circle with n marked positions.
- In a circle facing the centre, a person's left is your right on paper. Facing outward, it is reversed.
- Start from the most restrictive clue (an end position, or a fixed pair) rather than clue number 1.
- "Immediately" means adjacent with nobody in between; without it, a gap is allowed.
- Track negative clues ("A does not sit next to B") in a separate list and apply them as filters.
- If two arrangements survive, look for the clue that eliminates one — there is always exactly one.

Seating Arrangement — Frequently Asked Questions
How does left and right work in circular arrangements?+
For people facing the centre, their left is anticlockwise on your diagram and their right is clockwise. If they face outward, both are reversed. Write the convention on your sheet before you start.
Which clue should I use first?+
The most restrictive one — usually a person fixed at an end of a row, or a stated block of two or three people. Starting with vague clues forces you to redo the diagram.
