Classification — Questions and Answers

Classification in verbal reasoning asks which item does not share the property binding the others. Unlike verbal classification, the sets here often mix numbers, letter groups and words, so the first step is to identify what kind of property is at stake — arithmetic, alphabetical or semantic — before testing the options.

Classification— Concepts, Formulas & Shortcuts

  • First decide whether the group is numeric, alphabetical or semantic.
  • For numbers, test primes, squares, cubes and common multiples in that order.
  • For letter groups, convert to alphabet positions and check the gaps.
  • For words, name the shared category in one phrase.
  • The odd one differs by exactly one property — find which property the rest share.
  • Reject a rule that excludes more than one option; only one answer can be correct.

Classification — Frequently Asked Questions

How do I approach a letter-group classification?+

Convert each group to alphabet positions and examine the gaps between letters. If three groups step by 2 and one steps by 3, the outlier is immediate.

What if I find two possible rules?+

Choose the rule that excludes exactly one option. A valid classification question always has a single item failing a single shared property.
