Data Sufficiency — Questions and Answers

Data Sufficiency does not ask you to solve the problem — it asks whether the given statements contain enough information to solve it. That distinction is the whole skill: candidates lose marks by computing an answer instead of judging sufficiency. Evaluate each statement in isolation first, then together, and stop the moment you can decide.

Data Sufficiency— Concepts, Formulas & Shortcuts

  • Never compute the final answer; determine only whether it CAN be determined.
  • Evaluate statement I alone, then statement II alone, and only then both together.
  • A statement is sufficient if it yields exactly ONE possible answer.
  • If both statements individually suffice, the answer is "either alone is sufficient".
  • If neither alone suffices but together they do, the answer is "both together".
  • Beware of statements that merely restate given information — they add nothing.

  1. Q1.Question: What is the value of x? I. x + 3 = 7. II. x is a positive integer. Which statement(s) suffice?

    Easy
    • AI alone
    • BII alone
    • CBoth together only
    • DNeither
    +Show Answer & Explanation

    Answer: A. I alone

Explanation: Statement I gives x = 4 uniquely. Statement II alone allows infinitely many values.

Data Sufficiency question 1 of 10
  2. Q2.Question: Is the number even? I. It is divisible by 4. II. It is greater than 10. Which suffices?

    Moderate
    • AI alone
    • BII alone
    • CBoth together only
    • DNeither
    +Show Answer & Explanation

    Answer: A. I alone

Explanation: Divisibility by 4 guarantees evenness. Being greater than 10 says nothing about parity.

Data Sufficiency question 2 of 10
  3. Q3.Question: What is the area of a rectangle? I. Its length is 10 cm. II. Its breadth is 6 cm. Which suffices?

    Easy
    • AI alone
    • BII alone
    • CBoth together
    • DNeither
    +Show Answer & Explanation

    Answer: C. Both together

Explanation: Area needs both dimensions, so neither statement alone is enough but together they determine it.

Data Sufficiency question 3 of 10
  4. Q4.Question: How old is Ravi? I. He is 5 years older than his brother. II. His brother is 20 years old. Which suffices?

    Easy
    • AI alone
    • BII alone
    • CBoth together
    • DNeither
    +Show Answer & Explanation

    Answer: C. Both together

Explanation: Only by combining the difference with the brother's actual age can Ravi's age be fixed at 25.

Data Sufficiency question 4 of 10
  5. Q5.Question: What is the speed of the train? I. It covers 200 km. II. It takes 4 hours. Which suffices?

    Easy
    • AI alone
    • BII alone
    • CBoth together
    • DNeither
    +Show Answer & Explanation

    Answer: C. Both together

Explanation: Speed requires both distance and time; each statement alone gives only one of the two.

Data Sufficiency question 5 of 10
  6. Q6.Question: Is x greater than 5? I. x² = 36. II. x is positive. Which suffices?

    Difficult
    • AI alone
    • BII alone
    • CBoth together
    • DNeither
    +Show Answer & Explanation

    Answer: C. Both together

Explanation: I allows x = 6 or −6, so it is insufficient alone. With II fixing the sign, x = 6 and the answer is yes.

Data Sufficiency question 6 of 10
  7. Q7.Question: What is the perimeter of a square? I. Its area is 49 cm². II. Its diagonal is 7√2 cm. Which suffices?

    Difficult
    • AI alone
    • BII alone
    • CEither alone
    • DBoth together only
    +Show Answer & Explanation

    Answer: C. Either alone

Explanation: Area 49 gives side 7; diagonal 7√2 also gives side 7. Either statement alone determines the perimeter.

Data Sufficiency question 7 of 10
  8. Q8.Question: Who is the tallest? I. A is taller than B. II. C is taller than A. Which suffices?

    Moderate
    • AI alone
    • BII alone
    • CBoth together
    • DNeither
    +Show Answer & Explanation

    Answer: C. Both together

Explanation: Together they give C > A > B, identifying C as tallest. Neither statement alone ranks all three.

Data Sufficiency question 8 of 10
  9. Q9.In data sufficiency questions, your task is to:

    Easy
    • ASolve the problem completely
    • BDecide whether the data is enough to solve it
    • CFind the shortest solution
    • DEstimate the answer
    +Show Answer & Explanation

Answer: B. Decide whether the data is enough to solve it

Explanation: The question asks about sufficiency of information, not about the numerical answer itself.

Data Sufficiency question 9 of 10
  10. Q10.Question: What is the cost of one pen? I. Five pens cost ₹100. II. Pens are cheaper than pencils. Which suffices?

    Easy
    • AI alone
    • BII alone
    • CBoth together
    • DNeither
    +Show Answer & Explanation

    Answer: A. I alone

Explanation: Statement I gives ₹20 per pen. Statement II is a comparison with no numeric content.

Data Sufficiency — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the commonest mistake in data sufficiency?+

Actually solving the problem. You only need to establish that a unique answer exists. Computing it wastes time and often leads candidates to assume information not given.

How do I test a statement for sufficiency?+

Ask whether more than one answer is consistent with it. If two different values both satisfy the statement, it is insufficient.
