Logical Games — Questions and Answers

Logical Games give a set of rules — who can sit where, which items can be selected together — and ask what arrangements are possible. Treat the rules as constraints, write them in shorthand, and eliminate options by testing them against each rule in turn. Elimination is far faster than constructing every valid arrangement.

  • Write each rule in shorthand before touching the options.
  • Test the options against the most restrictive rule first — it eliminates fastest.
  • "If A then B" also means "if not B then not A"; the reverse is NOT implied.
  • Distinguish rules that fix positions from rules that merely forbid combinations.
  • For "which could be true", one valid arrangement is enough to confirm.
  • For "which must be true", one counter-arrangement is enough to reject.

Rarely. Testing the answer options against the rules is far quicker. Build arrangements only when the question asks what must be true in every case.

What is the commonest logical error in these questions?+

Reversing a conditional. "If A is selected then B is selected" does not mean B's selection forces A's. Only the contrapositive — if B is out, A is out — is valid.
