Analogies — Questions and Answers

An analogy asks you to identify the relationship in the first pair and reproduce it exactly in the second. The discipline that produces consistent accuracy is to state the relationship out loud as a full sentence — "a book is created by an author" — and then test each option against that sentence rather than against a vague feeling of similarity.

Analogies— Concepts, Formulas & Shortcuts

  • Write the bridge sentence first: "X is the ___ of Y", then apply it to the options.
  • Common relations: worker–tool, creator–creation, part–whole, cause–effect, animal–home, degree of intensity.
  • Preserve the direction: if the first pair is worker → tool, the answer must not be tool → worker.
  • Match the category: a person must map to a person, a place to a place.
  • If two options fit, tighten the bridge sentence until only one survives.
  • Beware of associations that are merely topical rather than structural.

Analogies — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the bridge-sentence method?+

Express the first pair as a precise sentence, e.g. "A pen is used to write". Then substitute each option: "A knife is used to cut" works, so that is the answer. It removes guesswork.

Does the order of the pair matter?+

Always. Doctor : Patient is a service-provider to service-receiver relation, so the answer must keep the same direction — Lawyer : Client, not Client : Lawyer.
