Hire Summer Interns in India

The April-to-July window: when to start recruiting, how to scope eight weeks, and how the cohort becomes next year's pipeline.

Who this is

An internship in the Indian summer break — broadly April to July depending on the university calendar — typically six to ten weeks, usually with penultimate-year students.

Who this is not

Not a six-month semester internship, and not a project you can extend if it overruns. The window is hard and it closes when term starts.

The summer window is short, fixed and shared with every other employer in the country. Two things follow. First, the recruiting has to happen months before — by the time students are free, the good ones have committed. Second, the project has to be scoped for eight usable weeks, not twelve, because week one is onboarding and the last week is handover.

The compensating advantage is that summer interns are almost always in their penultimate year, which makes the cohort the cleanest pipeline into next year's graduate hiring that exists. Companies that treat it that way get a conversion pool; companies that treat it as summer help get neither.

When this is the right hire

Compared with a six-month semester internship:

Choose this when

you want a cohort, a pipeline into next year's graduate hiring, and projects that fit eight to ten weeks. The cohort effect and the pipeline value are the reasons to prefer summer.

Choose the alternative when

the work genuinely needs six months of context before anything useful comes out, or you want capacity rather than pipeline. Semester internships suit deep technical work; summer suits scoped projects and assessment.

How to do it well

  1. 1
Start recruiting in the previous December to February

By March the strong candidates have committed. Companies that open in April are choosing from who is left.

  2. 2
    Scope for eight usable weeks

Week one is onboarding, the last week is handover and presentation. Scope the middle, and scope it so partial completion is still useful.

  3. 3
Run it as one cohort with one start date

One onboarding session, peers who ask each other questions, comparable reviews, and a showcase at the end.

  4. 4
Fix mentor capacity before you confirm numbers

Summer collides with the same leave season everywhere. A mentor on holiday in week four is the classic summer failure.

  5. 5
Hold a showcase in the final week

Every intern presents. It gives the work an audience, gives the business a reason to care, and gives you comparable evidence.

  6. 6
Make PPO decisions inside two weeks of the end

They return to a final year that opens with placement season. An early written offer removes their anxiety entirely and is worth more than a bigger offer later.

What to pay

Summer stipends sit at the standard band for the role and city; the duration adjustment for a short internship is small and cutting it is a false economy in a window where you are competing with every other employer for the same students at the same time. What differentiates offers in the summer market is rarely the stipend — it is the project, the named mentor, and whether the company has a reputation for converting.

How to assess

  • Assess for eight weeks of output, not for the full range of the role — the window rewards people who can scope and finish.
  • Ask specifically about their exam and result dates. Summer internship start dates slip constantly for this reason and it is entirely predictable.
  • Treat the internship itself as the real assessment for next year. That is the pipeline value, and it is worth more than the summer output.
  • Check accommodation and relocation feasibility early for out-of-city candidates — it is the most common late decline in this format.

What goes wrong

Recruiting in April

The strong candidates committed in February. You are choosing from who is left, and you will conclude the pool was weak.

Scoping twelve weeks of work into ten

Week one and the final week are not project weeks. The intern finishes nothing and everyone concludes the internship failed.

Mentors on summer leave

The most predictable failure in the format, and the easiest to check before confirming intake numbers.

No showcase

The work never gets an audience, the business never sees the value, and next year's budget conversation has nothing to point at.

Deciding PPOs in September

They are in placement season by then. You lose the interns you spent ten weeks assessing.

Questions employers ask

When should we start recruiting summer interns in India?+

December to February for an April-to-July internship. Strong candidates commit early, and by March you are selecting from those who have not yet accepted something else.

How long should a summer internship be?+

Six to ten weeks, matched to the university calendar. Scope the project for the middle weeks only — the first week is onboarding and the last is handover and presentation.

Should summer interns be in a cohort?+

Yes, with one start date if you can manage it. The peer group is a substantial part of why summer internships work, and a cohort makes reviews comparable and the final showcase possible.

How do we convert summer interns?+

Decide within two weeks of the internship ending and put it in writing. Summer interns return to a final year that opens with placement season; an early written PPO removes their anxiety entirely and is worth more to them than a larger offer made in September.

What projects work for a summer internship?+

Scoped, self-contained work where partial completion is still useful — a feature, an analysis, a tool, a documented improvement. Work that needs three months of context before producing anything belongs in a semester internship instead.
