Alphabet Series Puzzles — Questions and Answers

Alphabet puzzles hide a numerical rule behind letters. Convert every letter to its position, solve the arithmetic, then convert back — and the entire topic becomes routine. Two aids make this fast: the EJOTY anchors (E = 5, J = 10, O = 15, T = 20, Y = 25) and the opposite-letter rule, in which paired positions always sum to 27.

Alphabet Series Puzzles— Concepts, Formulas & Shortcuts

  • EJOTY anchors: E = 5, J = 10, O = 15, T = 20, Y = 25 — never count from A.
  • Opposite letter: position 27 − n (A↔Z, D↔W, M↔N).
  • Vowel positions: A = 1, E = 5, I = 9, O = 15, U = 21.
  • For grouped series (AC, EG, IK…), analyse the first and second letters as two independent sequences.
  • "nth letter from the left/right" questions: from the right, position = 27 − position from the left.
  • Reverse series are just negative differences — the method does not change.

Alphabet Series Puzzles — Frequently Asked Questions

How do I quickly find a letter's position?+

Use the nearest EJOTY anchor and count at most two steps. For R, start at T = 20 and step back twice to get 18.

What is the opposite-letter rule?+

A letter and its opposite always have positions summing to 27. So the opposite of D (4) is the 23rd letter, W.
