Odd Man Out and Series — Questions and Answers

Odd Man Out asks you to find the single item that does not share the property linking the rest. The reliable method is to test a fixed checklist in order — primes, perfect squares, perfect cubes, multiples, odd/even — rather than staring at the numbers hoping a pattern appears. Most exam sets are built on exactly those five properties.

Odd Man Out and Series— Concepts, Formulas & Shortcuts

  • Run the checklist: primes → perfect squares → perfect cubes → common multiples → odd/even.
  • Perfect squares to recognise: 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144.
  • Perfect cubes to recognise: 8, 27, 64, 125, 216, 343, 512.
  • If most terms share a divisor, the odd one is the term that does not.
  • For letter sets, check alphabet positions and vowel/consonant patterns.
  • The rule must fit ALL the other terms — if it fits only some, you have the wrong rule.

Odd Man Out and Series — Frequently Asked Questions

What should I check first in an odd-man-out question?+

Whether the numbers are primes, then perfect squares, then perfect cubes, then multiples of a common number. That sequence resolves the large majority of exam sets in under fifteen seconds.

What if two different rules seem to work?+

Choose the rule that excludes exactly one term. If two candidates remain, prefer the more specific property — being a perfect cube is more specific than being even.
