The question
"Some people think that children should begin their formal education at a very early age. Others believe they should start school at seven. Discuss both views and give your own opinion."
Model answer (~280 words, band 8)
The age at which children should start formal schooling is a topic of ongoing debate. While some argue that an early start gives children a strong academic foundation, others maintain that a later start protects their development. In my view, a slightly later start is more beneficial.
Those who favour early education point to clear cognitive gains. Young children absorb language and numeracy quickly, and beginning school early can help them develop these skills sooner, particularly for children from disadvantaged homes who may lack such stimulation. For example, well-run pre-schools have been shown to narrow early learning gaps before they widen.
However, there are strong reasons to delay formal instruction. Very young children learn most effectively through play, which builds social skills, creativity and emotional resilience that structured lessons can suppress. Countries such as Finland, where formal schooling begins at seven, consistently achieve excellent educational outcomes, suggesting that a later start does not disadvantage children and may in fact benefit them.
On balance, I believe children should begin structured, play-based learning early but delay formal, exam-focused education until around the age of six or seven. This approach captures the benefits of early stimulation while safeguarding the social and emotional growth that a rigid early curriculum can undermine.
In conclusion, although early formal education offers academic advantages, the developmental benefits of a later, play-centred start are more compelling, and a balanced system that combines both would serve children best.Notice: a clear opinion in the introduction, one view per body paragraph with a real example, a decisive conclusion, and natural linking ("However", "On balance", "although").
