IELTS Writing Task 2

IELTS Writing Task 2 Band 7 Plus Tips

The jump from band 6 to band 7 in Writing usually comes from a few specific upgrades. This lesson focuses on the changes that move the needle most.

What band 7 requires

  • Task Response: a clear position maintained throughout, with fully developed ideas.
  • Coherence: logical progression and a range of linking words used naturally.
  • Lexical Resource: less common vocabulary and collocations used accurately.
  • Grammar: a variety of complex structures with the majority of sentences error-free.

High-impact upgrades

  1. Answer the exact question — re-read the prompt and make every paragraph serve it.
  2. Use complex sentences (relative clauses, conditionals) but keep them accurate.
  3. Replace vague words: "good/bad/things" → "beneficial/detrimental/factors".
  4. Fix your top 3 repeated grammar errors — articles, subject-verb agreement and prepositions are the usual culprits.
  5. Vary your linking — avoid starting every paragraph with "Firstly/Secondly".
⚠️

Accuracy beats ambition. A simple correct sentence scores better than a complex one full of errors. Only use vocabulary and structures you can control.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why am I stuck at band 6 in Writing?+

The usual causes are not fully answering the question, underdeveloped ideas, and frequent small grammar errors. Fixing repeated errors and developing two ideas deeply often lifts you to band 7.

Do big words increase my band?+

Only if used accurately and naturally. Forced "advanced" words that are used incorrectly lower your Lexical Resource score. Precision matters more than difficulty.
