IELTS Writing Task 2

IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay Types

Every Task 2 question fits one of a few essay types. Identifying the type correctly tells you exactly what structure the examiner expects. This lesson covers all five.

The five essay types

TypeQuestion cueWhat to do
Opinion (agree/disagree)"To what extent do you agree?"State and defend one clear position
Discussion"Discuss both views and give your opinion."Explain both sides, then your view
Advantages/Disadvantages"Do the advantages outweigh…?"Cover both and reach a judgement
Problem/Solution (or Cause/Solution)"What problems…? What solutions…?"Explain the problems and realistic solutions
Two-part (direct) questionTwo direct questionsAnswer both questions clearly
⚠️

The biggest Task Response error is answering the wrong question — e.g. discussing both views when asked only for your opinion. Read the prompt twice and identify the type before planning.

Match structure to type

For an opinion essay, both body paragraphs support your single position. For a discussion essay, one body paragraph covers each view. For advantages/disadvantages, one paragraph each, with your judgement in the conclusion.

Can I give my opinion in a discussion essay?+

Yes — if the prompt says "and give your own opinion", you must include a clear opinion, usually stated in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion.
