How to Hire a Fresher Data Analyst: Skills, Test Design and Interview Loop

Data analyst is one of the most applied-for fresher roles in India, and one of the hardest to screen. Many resumes list the same course certificates and the same tools, and the gap between someone who has watched tutorials and someone who can answer a business question with messy data only shows up when you test it. This guide covers what to test and how. If you want to skip to sourcing, see hire data analyst freshers.

The skills that actually matter

SkillMinimum for a fresherNice to have
Excel / Google SheetsLookups, pivot tables, conditional formulas, basic charts, cleaning text and datesPower Query, dynamic arrays
SQLSELECT with WHERE, GROUP BY, JOINs, simple aggregationsWindow functions, CTEs
A BI toolOne dashboard built end to end in Power BI, Tableau or Looker StudioData modelling, DAX or calculated fields
Basic statisticsMean vs median, distributions, percentages, reading a trend honestlyA/B test basics, correlation vs causation
CommunicationExplains a finding in two or three plain sentencesStructures a short written report
Python or RNot required for most junior analyst rolespandas for cleaning, simple scripts

Decide which of these your role truly needs. If the job is 80% dashboard work, hire for BI skill and see Power BI freshers or Tableau freshers. If it is closer to requirements and process work, a business analyst fresher may fit better. If you need modelling and Python, you are hiring a data science fresher, not an analyst.

Write a role description that filters

State the actual data, tools and questions the analyst will work on: "weekly sales data from 40 stores in Google Sheets and a SQL database; build and maintain a Power BI dashboard; answer ad-hoc questions from the sales head". This attracts people who want that work and deters those who want a data science title. The data science intern job description is a good starting template, and the sibling post how to write a job description for freshers covers the structure.

A 60 to 90 minute practical test

The test is where you learn the most. Keep it realistic, time-boxed and the same for every candidate. A design that works for most businesses:

  1. The dataset: a CSV of 2,000 to 5,000 rows based on your real data, anonymised, or a realistic dummy version. Include deliberate mess: duplicate rows, a few blank values, dates in two formats, one obvious outlier.
  2. Part A, cleaning (20 minutes): ask them to clean the data and list what they changed.
  3. Part B, analysis (30 minutes): three business questions, such as "which region grew fastest quarter on quarter", "what share of revenue comes from the top 10 customers", "is there anything unusual in March".
  4. Part C, SQL (15 minutes): two or three queries on a small schema, written on paper or in a shared editor.
  5. Part D, communicate (15 minutes): a five-line summary for a non-technical manager, plus one chart.

Score the list of cleaning steps and the written summary as heavily as the numbers. An analyst who gets the right answer but cannot say what it means is only half useful. Do not use the test as free work on live problems; keep the dataset clearly a test.

Reviewing a portfolio

Many candidates share a GitHub link or a dashboard. Use a quick checklist:

  • Is the data their own choice or a common tutorial dataset? Tutorial datasets are fine, but look for an original question asked of them.
  • Is there a written explanation? A dashboard without any narrative tells you little.
  • Can they explain one decision (why this chart, why this filter) when you ask?
  • Does the SQL or code show cleaning, or only final queries on clean data?

A portfolio is a bonus, not a requirement. Candidates from smaller colleges often have less time and guidance to build one, so let the practical test carry the decision.

A lean interview loop

StageLengthWhat it tests
Resume and short screening questions10 minutesTools used, availability, location
Practical test60 to 90 minutesCleaning, analysis, SQL, written summary
Test walkthrough interview30 to 40 minutesReasoning, honesty about mistakes, communication
Hiring manager or business stakeholder chat20 to 30 minutesCuriosity about the business, fit with the team

In the walkthrough, ask "what would you check next if you had another hour?" Strong analysts always have an answer. Use the interview scorecard template so each interviewer scores independently, and see the sibling post on interview questions to ask interns for behavioural questions.

Indicative CTC and stipend

As an indicative range only (it varies by city, company size and industry), fresher data analyst offers in India commonly fall somewhere around ₹3 to ₹6 LPA, with product companies and metros at the higher end and small businesses in smaller cities at the lower end. Intern stipends vary even more widely. Check current bands on hiring insights and the India early talent report and use the stipend calculator for internships. If you are unsure, a paid three-month internship through data analyst interns lets you see real work before committing to a CTC.

Common mistakes employers make

  • Hiring on certificates. Course certificates show interest, not skill. The practical test shows skill. The sibling guide on screening fresher resumes explains how to shortlist without over-weighting them.
  • Testing only tools. An analyst's value is asking the right question and explaining the answer.
  • A test that takes a whole weekend. Good candidates with several applications will drop out. Keep it under 90 minutes, or pay for longer tasks.
  • No clean data access after joining. Freshers are hired and then wait weeks for database access. Arrange it before day one, and follow a written onboarding plan.
  • No senior reviewer. A lone fresher analyst with nobody to check their numbers will eventually present a wrong number to leadership.

Frequently asked questions

What skills should a fresher data analyst have?

At minimum, solid Excel or Google Sheets, basic SQL with joins and aggregations, one BI tool, basic statistics and the ability to explain a finding in plain language. Python is useful but not required for most junior analyst roles.

How long should a data analyst test be for freshers?

Sixty to ninety minutes is usually enough to test cleaning, analysis, SQL and a short written summary. Longer take-home tests cause good candidates to drop out unless you pay for the time.

What is the salary of a fresher data analyst in India?

As an indicative range only, many fresher data analyst offers fall around 3 to 6 LPA, depending heavily on city, company size and industry. Check current benchmarks before you set your band.

Should I hire a data analyst intern before a full-time fresher?

If you are unsure about the role or the candidate, a paid internship of about three months is a sensible way to test both. Arrange data access and a senior reviewer before the intern starts.
