Hire a Primary Teacher in India — 2026

A Primary Teacher takes one class of children through most subjects for the whole year — which makes them the single adult most responsible for whether a child aged six to eleven enjoys school at all.

What a Primary Teacher actually does

  • Teach the core primary subjects — language, mathematics, EVS — to one assigned class section
  • Build foundational literacy and numeracy, and track each child against the school’s learning outcomes
  • Prepare age-appropriate teaching aids, charts, worksheets and activity material
  • Maintain daily attendance, behaviour notes and the term-wise progress record for every child
  • Meet parents regularly, including the difficult conversations about a child who is struggling
  • Supervise lunch, playtime and transitions safely for a class of young children
  • Run classroom routines and discipline for children who cannot yet self-regulate for long periods

What makes this hire hard

Temperament matters more than qualification at this level. In a demo lesson, watch how the candidate responds to a child who answers wrongly or will not sit still — warmth and patience cannot be trained in a term, whereas syllabus knowledge can. Check comfort teaching multiple subjects, since primary teachers rarely teach only one.

Questions that separate a real candidate from a padded CV

  1. 1How would you teach place value to a Class II child who has not understood it after two attempts?
  2. 2How do you settle a class of thirty six-year-olds after the lunch break?
  3. 3What would you say to a parent whose child is well behind the class in reading?
  4. 4Do you hold CTET Paper I or D.El.Ed?

A realistic Primary Teacher interview process

  1. 1.Document and qualification screening
  2. 2.Demo lesson with a real primary class
  3. 3.Child-handling and temperament discussion
  4. 4.Principal / coordinator round
  5. 5.Background and reference verification

Hiring a Primary Teacher — questions employers ask

What qualification is required for a primary teacher in India?

D.El.Ed (or B.El.Ed) is the specialist primary teaching qualification. Many private schools also accept graduation with B.Ed. For government and aided schools, CTET Paper I is normally required on top.

Should a primary teacher teach all subjects?

In most Indian schools yes — one class teacher handles language, maths and EVS for their section, with specialists only for art, music and physical education. Hire for breadth and comfort switching subjects.

How is a primary teacher different from a pre-primary teacher?

Pre-primary is pre-literacy and play-based for ages three to five. Primary teaching is formal instruction against a syllabus with graded assessment, so the pedagogy and the record-keeping load are quite different.
