A Mechanical Engineer designs, improves or maintains the physical systems a plant runs on — where a calculation error becomes a broken machine or an injured operator, not a failed build.
Indicative Indian market ranges. Metro and specialist roles sit at the upper end.
Ask them to sketch and explain a design decision on paper — software proficiency is common, engineering judgement is not. Plant roles are often in tier-2 or industrial towns, so be explicit about location and shift pattern early; relocation reluctance is the most common late-stage drop-off.
B.E./B.Tech for design, R&D and project engineering; diploma holders are often stronger for shop-floor, maintenance and supervisory work where practical experience dominates.
Location. Candidates accept and then reconsider relocating to an industrial town. Raise it in the first conversation and confirm family agreement before the offer.
A paper-and-pencil problem. CAD skill is trainable and widely claimed; the ability to reason about loads, tolerances and failure modes is what you are actually buying.
