Your entry ticket to MS, PhD and graduate programmes worldwide
Graduate Record Examinations

The GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) is a globally recognised admissions test owned by ETS, accepted by thousands of graduate and business schools for Master’s (MS), PhD and even MBA programmes. It is the go-to test for Indian students applying to MS in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Management and the sciences, especially in the USA.
The current GRE General Test is shorter — under 2 hours — with three measures: Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning. It is section-adaptive: your performance in the first Verbal/Quant section shapes the difficulty of the second, and you can move freely within a section, skipping and revisiting questions.
A strong GRE score (typically 320+ out of 340, with a high Quant for STEM applicants) makes your profile competitive for top universities and funding. With targeted coaching in vocabulary, quant concepts and essay writing, most students can raise their score meaningfully in a few weeks.

Section-wise structure, question types and timing for the GRE.
| Section | What it tests | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Analytical Writing | One "Analyze an Issue" task — build and support an argument in a timed essay. | 30 min |
| Verbal Reasoning | Two sections, 27 questions total — reading comprehension, text completion, sentence equivalence. | 41 min |
| Quantitative Reasoning | Two sections, 27 questions total — arithmetic, algebra, geometry, data analysis. On-screen calculator provided. | 47 min |
| Section-adaptive | Your performance in the first Verbal/Quant section determines the difficulty of the second. | — |
Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning are each scored 130–170 (total 260–340), and Analytical Writing is scored 0–6 in half-point steps. A total of 320+ is competitive; STEM applicants should target a high Quant (165+). There is no negative marking.
The GRE is available year-round, on demand — book a test-centre slot or take the GRE at Home with online proctoring. Official scores are available in your ETS account in about 8–10 days, and you can send up to four free score reports on test day.
The GRE General Test costs approximately $220 in India (around ₹18,000+). Additional score reports, rescheduling and special handling carry extra fees. Confirm the current fee on the official ETS website.
GRE scores are valid for 5 years from the test date, giving you flexibility across multiple application cycles. ETS lets you use the ScoreSelect option to send only your best scores.
