An M.Com is a specialist signal, not a general one. It opens three doors that a B.Com cannot open on its own: college lectureship, government posts that stipulate post-graduation, and research or policy roles. In the private sector, however, recruiters rarely pay a premium for M.Com over B.Com — they pay for the skill you attached to it. Plan for the first three doors, and treat any corporate offer as a bonus.
The four routes after M.Com
Almost all M.Com post-graduates end up on one of four paths. They are not mutually exclusive — most people run two in parallel for the first year — but you should know which one you are actually optimising for.
| Route | Who it suits | Time to first income |
|---|---|---|
| Government exams | You want security, a pension and a defined promotion ladder | 1–3 years of preparation |
| Private sector job | You want to start earning and learning now | 1–4 months |
| Higher studies | Your target role has a degree or qualification as a hard gate | 1–3 years |
| Skill-first route | You want the fastest jump in salary without another degree | 3–6 months |
Route 1 — Government exams after M.Com
Post-graduation unlocks a tier of exams and posts that graduates cannot apply for at all — UGC NET being the most important. Every "any graduate" exam below also remains open to you, usually with a higher age ceiling. Start with the live government exam notifications and the exam calendar so you are applying to open forms rather than reading about closed ones.
| Exam | Why it fits you |
|---|---|
| UGC NET (Commerce) | The gateway to Assistant Professor eligibility and JRF fellowship. Commerce is one of the largest NET subjects by candidate count. |
| RBI Grade B | The Finance & Management paper maps directly onto an M.Com syllabus. |
| SSC CGL | Assistant Audit Officer under CAG is the premium post for a commerce post-graduate. |
| NABARD Grade A | Development banking officer; strong fit for economics-and-commerce preparation. |
| IBPS PO | Still available, and the age ceiling of 30 gives a post-graduate room for two or three attempts. |
| SBI PO | Highest-paid entry officer job in public-sector banking. |

How to prepare without wasting a year
Nearly every Indian competitive exam tests the same three things before it tests anything subject-specific. Build those first, because the work carries across every exam in the table above:
- Quantitative aptitude — arithmetic, data interpretation and speed. The single largest scoring section in most papers.
- Reasoning and verbal ability — logical, verbal and non-verbal reasoning.
- Current affairs and general knowledge — a daily habit, not a last-month scramble.
- Full topic-wise practice across every exam preparation section.
The honest warning: preparing for a government exam with no parallel income is the most common way graduates lose three years. Take a job or an internship, prepare in the evenings, and give yourself a defined number of attempts before you reassess.
Route 2 — Private sector jobs after M.Com
These are the roles that actually hire M.Com post-graduates in India, with realistic fresher salary bands. Salaries vary by city and company tier — treat the lower end as a tier-3 city or small company, and the upper end as a metro with a funded or large employer.
| Role | Fresher salary | What gets you hired |
|---|---|---|
| Senior Accounts Executive | ₹3.6–6 LPA | The M.Com typically buys you one rung above a fresh B.Com. |
| Finance Analyst | ₹4.5–8 LPA | Needs Excel plus a BI tool to command the upper half of that range. |
| Assistant Professor (after NET) | ₹4.8–9 LPA | NET or NET-JRF is non-negotiable for a permanent post. |
| Internal Audit Executive | ₹4–7 LPA | Risk and controls work in shared-service centres. |
| Taxation Specialist | ₹4.2–7.5 LPA | Direct or indirect tax; GST specialists are in short supply. |

Route 3 — Higher studies after M.Com
Another degree is worth it when it is a hard gate on the job you want — and a waste when it is a way of postponing the decision. Judge each of these by whether the role you are targeting genuinely requires it.
- Ph.D. in Commerce — The natural continuation if you clear NET-JRF; the fellowship funds the research.
- CA / CMA — An M.Com plus CMA is a well-regarded combination for costing and management-accounting roles.
- CFA — Choose only if you are targeting investment research or asset management specifically.
If you are still choosing, the post-graduate entrance exams section lists what each course requires, and short online courses let you test a subject before committing years to it.
Route 4 — The skills that change your salary band
This is the highest-return route for most M.Com post-graduates, and the most neglected. Each of these can be learned in three to six months alongside a job or exam preparation, and each moves you into a visibly higher salary band.
- Advanced Excel + Power Query — Still the core tool of every finance function.
- Power BI — Management reporting has moved from spreadsheets to dashboards.
- SQL — Lets you pull your own data instead of waiting on an analyst.
- Research methodology — Essential if NET-JRF and a Ph.D. are the target.
Work through the learning hub and course catalogue to build these, then put them on a resume that actually gets read — the free AI resume builder formats for the applicant tracking systems most Indian employers now use.
A realistic 12-month plan
| Months | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Pick one primary route and one backup. Build a proper resume with the resume builder. Apply to 20 openings a week to calibrate what the market responds to. |
| 3–5 | Start one skill from Route 4 and finish it. In parallel, register for the first exam from Route 1 whose form is open on the notifications page. |
| 6–8 | Take a job or internship even if it is below your target — income and experience both compound. Keep exam preparation to fixed evening hours. |
| 9–12 | Sit your first exam attempt. Use interview preparation before every private interview. Reassess honestly: is the primary route working, or is the backup now the better bet? |
Frequently asked questions
Is M.Com worth it in India?
It is worth it if your goal is teaching, research, or a government post that requires post-graduation — in those tracks it is mandatory. For a private-sector finance job, employers pay for skills and certifications rather than the master's degree itself, so pair it with Power BI, SQL or a CMA to see a salary difference.
Can I become a lecturer after M.Com?
You need to clear UGC NET in Commerce as well. NET alone makes you eligible for Assistant Professor; NET with JRF additionally funds a Ph.D. Most permanent college posts now expect NET plus a Ph.D. in progress.
M.Com or MBA — which is better?
They serve different ends. MBA is a corporate-placement degree and is worth its fee mainly at a top-50 institute. M.Com is an academic and government-eligibility degree, costs a fraction as much, and is the correct choice if UGC NET or a state post is your target.
