An LLM is worth precisely as much as the specialisation attached to it. A general LLM adds a line to your résumé; an LLM in corporate law, intellectual property, taxation or international arbitration signals a defined expertise that firms and companies will pay for. It is also the entry requirement for legal academia and improves your standing considerably in judicial service interviews.

The four routes after LLM

Almost all LLM post-graduates end up on one of four paths. They are not mutually exclusive — most people run two in parallel for the first year — but you should know which one you are actually optimising for.

RouteWho it suitsTime to first income
Government examsYou want security, a pension and a defined promotion ladder1–3 years of preparation
Private sector jobYou want to start earning and learning now1–4 months
Higher studiesYour target role has a degree or qualification as a hard gate1–3 years
Skill-first routeYou want the fastest jump in salary without another degree3–6 months

Route 1 — Government exams after LLM

An LLM is required for UGC NET in Law and for most legal academic posts, and strengthens candidacy for senior legal officer and judicial positions. Start with the live government exam notifications and the exam calendar so you are applying to open forms rather than reading about closed ones.

ExamWhy it fits you
UGC NET (Law)Assistant Professor eligibility and JRF; the academic route.
Judicial Services (PCS-J)An LLM adds depth that shows in the interview stage.
Legal Officer (IBPS SO)Public-sector bank law officer cadre.
UPSC CSE (Law optional)Your specialisation gives you an edge in the optional paper.
Assistant Public ProsecutorState criminal justice recruitment.

Browse by category: Judiciary exams · Teaching exams · Civil services exam · Banking exams. Results and cut-offs for closed cycles are listed under recently declared results.

How to prepare without wasting a year

Nearly every Indian competitive exam tests the same three things before it tests anything subject-specific. Build those first, because the work carries across every exam in the table above:

The honest warning: preparing for a government exam with no parallel income is the most common way graduates lose three years. Take a job or an internship, prepare in the evenings, and give yourself a defined number of attempts before you reassess.

Route 2 — Private sector jobs after LLM

These are the roles that actually hire LLM post-graduates in India, with realistic fresher salary bands. Salaries vary by city and company tier — treat the lower end as a tier-3 city or small company, and the upper end as a metro with a funded or large employer.

RoleFresher salaryWhat gets you hired
Specialist Corporate Associate₹8–20 LPAM&A, banking or securities law at a firm with a matching practice.
IP Attorney₹6–16 LPAPatents and trademarks; a technical background is a strong advantage.
Tax Law Consultant₹6–15 LPADirect and indirect tax advisory at Big 4 and law firms.
Assistant Professor (after NET)₹5–10 LPALaw schools recruit steadily; NET or Ph.D. required.
Senior Compliance Manager₹8–18 LPARegulated financial institutions.
International Arbitration Associate₹8–20 LPAA small but growing and well-paid Indian practice area.

Route 3 — Higher studies after LLM

Another degree is worth it when it is a hard gate on the job you want — and a waste when it is a way of postponing the decision. Judge each of these by whether the role you are targeting genuinely requires it.

  • Ph.D. in Law — Required for permanent academic posts and legal research leadership.
  • LLM abroad — A New York or UK qualification opens international practice; weigh the cost against the realistic return.
  • Company Secretary — Combines with corporate law for senior compliance roles.

If you are still choosing, the post-graduate entrance exams section lists what each course requires, and short online courses let you test a subject before committing years to it.

Route 4 — The skills that change your salary band

This is the highest-return route for most LLM post-graduates, and the most neglected. Each of these can be learned in three to six months alongside a job or exam preparation, and each moves you into a visibly higher salary band.

Work through the learning hub and course catalogue to build these, then put them on a resume that actually gets read — the free AI resume builder formats for the applicant tracking systems most Indian employers now use.

A realistic 12-month plan

MonthsWhat to do
1–2Pick one primary route and one backup. Build a proper resume with the resume builder. Apply to 20 openings a week to calibrate what the market responds to.
3–5Start one skill from Route 4 and finish it. In parallel, register for the first exam from Route 1 whose form is open on the notifications page.
6–8Take a job or internship even if it is below your target — income and experience both compound. Keep exam preparation to fixed evening hours.
9–12Sit your first exam attempt. Use interview preparation before every private interview. Reassess honestly: is the primary route working, or is the backup now the better bet?

Frequently asked questions

Is LLM worth it in India?

It is worth it with a clear specialisation — corporate, IP, tax or international law — because that is what firms and companies pay a premium for. A general LLM adds little to a practising lawyer's market value. It is also mandatory if you want to teach law or pursue a Ph.D.

Can I become a law professor after LLM?

Yes, with UGC NET in Law. NET establishes Assistant Professor eligibility; NET with JRF funds a Ph.D. Most law schools now expect a Ph.D. in progress for permanent appointment and confirmation.

Which LLM specialisation has the best scope?

Corporate and commercial law has the largest hiring base in India. Intellectual property is growing fastest, particularly for candidates with a science or engineering background. Taxation is consistently short of specialists, and international arbitration is small but very well paid.
