ITI is the most direct route from education to employment in India. It is a trade qualification — electrician, fitter, welder, mechanic — and employers hire on the trade, not the marks. Skilled tradespeople are genuinely scarce in Indian manufacturing, which means a good ITI holder with two years of experience is often harder to replace than a fresh engineering graduate. The two decisions worth making early are whether to pursue an apprenticeship and whether to sit the railway and defence exams, which recruit ITI holders in very large numbers.
The four routes after ITI
Almost all ITI certificate holders end up on one of four paths. They are not mutually exclusive — most people run two in parallel for the first year — but you should know which one you are actually optimising for.
| Route | Who it suits | Time to first income |
|---|---|---|
| Government exams | You want security, a pension and a defined promotion ladder | 1–3 years of preparation |
| Private sector job | You want to start earning and learning now | 1–4 months |
| Higher studies | Your target role has a degree or qualification as a hard gate | 1–3 years |
| Skill-first route | You want the fastest jump in salary without another degree | 3–6 months |
Route 1 — Government exams after ITI
The railways and defence forces recruit ITI holders in tens of thousands. These are among the most accessible secure government jobs in India, and the eligibility is your trade certificate. Start with the live government exam notifications and the exam calendar so you are applying to open forms rather than reading about closed ones.
| Exam | Why it fits you |
|---|---|
| RRB ALP (Assistant Loco Pilot) | Very large recurring vacancies; ITI in a relevant trade is the core eligibility. |
| RRB Technician | Technician grades across railway departments; high vacancy volume. |
| RRB Group D | The largest recruitment exercise in India by vacancy count. |
| Army Technical Agniveer | Technical trades in the armed forces. |
| Army Tradesman Agniveer | Trade-specific defence recruitment. |
| DRDO Technician A | Defence research laboratory technician posts. |
| RRC / Railway Apprentice | Apprenticeship intake; often a route to regular absorption. |

How to prepare without wasting a year
Nearly every Indian competitive exam tests the same three things before it tests anything subject-specific. Build those first, because the work carries across every exam in the table above:
- Quantitative aptitude — arithmetic, data interpretation and speed. The single largest scoring section in most papers.
- Reasoning and verbal ability — logical, verbal and non-verbal reasoning.
- Current affairs and general knowledge — a daily habit, not a last-month scramble.
- Full topic-wise practice across every exam preparation section.
The honest warning: preparing for a government exam with no parallel income is the most common way graduates lose three years. Take a job or an internship, prepare in the evenings, and give yourself a defined number of attempts before you reassess.
Route 2 — Private sector jobs after ITI
These are the roles that actually hire ITI certificate holders in India, with realistic fresher salary bands. Salaries vary by city and company tier — treat the lower end as a tier-3 city or small company, and the upper end as a metro with a funded or large employer.
| Role | Fresher salary | What gets you hired |
|---|---|---|
| Maintenance Technician | ₹1.8–4 LPA | Plants, facilities and service companies. Steady, transferable demand. |
| Machine Operator / CNC Operator | ₹2–4.5 LPA | CNC programming knowledge raises pay noticeably above plain operation. |
| Electrician (Industrial) | ₹2–4.5 LPA | A licensed wireman certificate adds meaningfully to your rate. |
| Welder / Fabricator | ₹2.2–5 LPA | Certified welders — 6G and similar — earn well above the base range, including overseas. |
| Automobile Service Technician | ₹1.8–4 LPA | EV service training is where this trade is heading. |
| Field Service Engineer | ₹2.4–5 LPA | Equipment installation and servicing; travel-heavy but well paid. |

Route 3 — Higher studies after ITI
Another degree is worth it when it is a hard gate on the job you want — and a waste when it is a way of postponing the decision. Judge each of these by whether the role you are targeting genuinely requires it.
- Diploma via lateral entry — ITI holders can enter the second year of a polytechnic diploma, which then opens lateral entry to B.Tech.
- Apprenticeship (NAPS) — Paid on-the-job training, and many apprentices are absorbed permanently.
- Advanced trade certification — 6G welding, CNC programming or EV servicing — each has a clear and immediate pay effect.
If you are still choosing, the post-graduate entrance exams section lists what each course requires, and short online courses let you test a subject before committing years to it.
Route 4 — The skills that change your salary band
This is the highest-return route for most ITI certificate holders, and the most neglected. Each of these can be learned in three to six months alongside a job or exam preparation, and each moves you into a visibly higher salary band.
- Advanced trade certification — A certified welder or CNC programmer earns far more than an uncertified one.
- CNC programming — Moves you from operating a machine to setting it.
- Industrial safety training — Required on most plants and sites.
- Basic computer literacy — The main obstacle to promotion into supervisory roles.
Work through the learning hub and course catalogue to build these, then put them on a resume that actually gets read — the free AI resume builder formats for the applicant tracking systems most Indian employers now use.
A realistic 12-month plan
| Months | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Pick one primary route and one backup. Build a proper resume with the resume builder. Apply to 20 openings a week to calibrate what the market responds to. |
| 3–5 | Start one skill from Route 4 and finish it. In parallel, register for the first exam from Route 1 whose form is open on the notifications page. |
| 6–8 | Take a job or internship even if it is below your target — income and experience both compound. Keep exam preparation to fixed evening hours. |
| 9–12 | Sit your first exam attempt. Use interview preparation before every private interview. Reassess honestly: is the primary route working, or is the backup now the better bet? |
Frequently asked questions
Which government job can I get after ITI?
Railway recruitment is the largest employer of ITI holders — RRB ALP, RRB Technician and RRB Group D together account for tens of thousands of vacancies per cycle. Army Technical and Tradesman Agniveer recruitment and DRDO Technician posts are the other main routes.
Can I do B.Tech after ITI?
Not directly, but the path exists: ITI holders can take lateral entry into the second year of a polytechnic diploma, and the diploma then allows lateral entry into the second year of B.Tech. It takes longer than the direct route but is entirely feasible alongside work.
Which ITI trade has the best scope?
Electrician and fitter have the broadest demand across industries. Welding pays the most for certified professionals, particularly 6G-certified welders, with strong overseas demand in the Gulf. Automobile mechanics with EV servicing training are positioned for where that trade is moving.
