Design is the field where your portfolio is the entire application. Recruiters open the link before they read the résumé, and a strong portfolio from an unknown college beats a weak one from a famous institute almost every time. The second thing worth knowing early is that digital product design — UI and UX — pays substantially more than fashion, graphic or textile design in India, and that the skills transfer more easily than most design students assume.

The four routes after B.Des / Design

Almost all Design graduates end up on one of four paths. They are not mutually exclusive — most people run two in parallel for the first year — but you should know which one you are actually optimising for.

RouteWho it suitsTime to first income
Government examsYou want security, a pension and a defined promotion ladder1–3 years of preparation
Private sector jobYou want to start earning and learning now1–4 months
Higher studiesYour target role has a degree or qualification as a hard gate1–3 years
Skill-first routeYou want the fastest jump in salary without another degree3–6 months

Route 1 — Government exams after B.Des / Design

Design roles in government exist through handloom and handicrafts boards, textile corporations, NID and NIFT faculty positions, and public-sector communication departments. Start with the live government exam notifications and the exam calendar so you are applying to open forms rather than reading about closed ones.

ExamWhy it fits you
UGC NET (after master's)Required for design faculty posts at universities.
NID / NIFT faculty recruitmentDesign institutes recruit through their own advertised processes.
Handloom & Handicrafts Board postsTextile and craft design roles under the Ministry of Textiles.
SSC CGLAny-graduate central government route.
State PSU design postsPublicity and design cadres in state corporations.

How to prepare without wasting a year

Nearly every Indian competitive exam tests the same three things before it tests anything subject-specific. Build those first, because the work carries across every exam in the table above:

The honest warning: preparing for a government exam with no parallel income is the most common way graduates lose three years. Take a job or an internship, prepare in the evenings, and give yourself a defined number of attempts before you reassess.

Route 2 — Private sector jobs after B.Des / Design

These are the roles that actually hire Design graduates in India, with realistic fresher salary bands. Salaries vary by city and company tier — treat the lower end as a tier-3 city or small company, and the upper end as a metro with a funded or large employer.

RoleFresher salaryWhat gets you hired
UI / UX Designer₹4–14 LPAThe best-paid design career in India. Figma plus two case studies is the entry package.
Graphic Designer₹2.8–7 LPABroad demand; specialising in motion or brand raises pay noticeably.
Product Designer₹5–16 LPAEnd-to-end digital product design at product companies.
Fashion Designer₹2.5–6 LPAExport houses and brands; entry pay is modest and improves with a label or niche.
Motion Graphics Designer₹3.5–9 LPAStrong demand from content and marketing teams.
Brand / Visual Designer₹4–10 LPAIn-house brand teams pay better than most agencies.

Route 3 — Higher studies after B.Des / Design

Another degree is worth it when it is a hard gate on the job you want — and a waste when it is a way of postponing the decision. Judge each of these by whether the role you are targeting genuinely requires it.

  • M.Des — NID, IIT IDC or a comparable institute; worth it for the network and portfolio as much as the teaching.
  • PG Diploma in UX — The quickest route from any design background into the best-paid design roles.
  • MBA in Design Strategy — For design leadership and product strategy positions.

If you are still choosing, the post-graduate entrance exams section lists what each course requires, and short online courses let you test a subject before committing years to it.

Route 4 — The skills that change your salary band

This is the highest-return route for most Design graduates, and the most neglected. Each of these can be learned in three to six months alongside a job or exam preparation, and each moves you into a visibly higher salary band.

Work through the learning hub and course catalogue to build these, then put them on a resume that actually gets read — the free AI resume builder formats for the applicant tracking systems most Indian employers now use.

A realistic 12-month plan

MonthsWhat to do
1–2Pick one primary route and one backup. Build a proper resume with the resume builder. Apply to 20 openings a week to calibrate what the market responds to.
3–5Start one skill from Route 4 and finish it. In parallel, register for the first exam from Route 1 whose form is open on the notifications page.
6–8Take a job or internship even if it is below your target — income and experience both compound. Keep exam preparation to fixed evening hours.
9–12Sit your first exam attempt. Use interview preparation before every private interview. Reassess honestly: is the primary route working, or is the backup now the better bet?

Frequently asked questions

Which design field pays the most in India?

UI/UX and product design, at ₹4–16 LPA, well ahead of graphic design at ₹2.8–7 LPA and fashion design at ₹2.5–6 LPA. The gap exists because product companies budget for design as a core function while most other design work sits under marketing services.

Can I switch from fashion or graphic design to UX?

Yes, and it is a common move. Your visual training transfers directly; what you need to add is research method, interaction design and a portfolio of two or three product case studies that show your reasoning rather than only your visuals. A focused three-to-six month effort is usually enough.

Do I need a degree from NID or NIFT to succeed in design?

No. Design hiring is portfolio-first — recruiters open your work before your résumé. A strong portfolio from a lesser-known college consistently beats a weak one from a famous institute. What those institutes reliably provide is a network and structured critique, not a hiring guarantee.
