B.Com is the single most common graduate degree in India, and that is exactly the problem — roughly 2 million students finish it every year, so the degree alone no longer separates you from the queue. The good news is that B.Com sits at the doorway of three of the largest recruiters in the country: banks, the government, and the accounting/finance back-offices of every mid-size and large company. What decides your first salary is not the marks on the degree, but which of those three doors you walk through in the twelve months after you graduate.
The four routes after B.Com
Almost all B.Com graduates end up on one of four paths. They are not mutually exclusive — most people run two in parallel for the first year — but you should know which one you are actually optimising for.
| Route | Who it suits | Time to first income |
|---|---|---|
| Government exams | You want security, a pension and a defined promotion ladder | 1–3 years of preparation |
| Private sector job | You want to start earning and learning now | 1–4 months |
| Higher studies | Your target role has a degree or qualification as a hard gate | 1–3 years |
| Skill-first route | You want the fastest jump in salary without another degree | 3–6 months |
Route 1 — Government exams after B.Com
Commerce graduates are the single most sought-after profile in banking and clerical government recruitment. Every one of the exams below accepts "any graduate", and the quantitative-aptitude syllabus is material you have already studied. Start with the live government exam notifications and the exam calendar so you are applying to open forms rather than reading about closed ones.
| Exam | Why it fits you |
|---|---|
| IBPS PO (Probationary Officer) | The flagship public-sector bank officer role. Any graduate, age 20–30. Scale-I officer pay starts around ₹52,000–57,000/month gross. |
| IBPS Clerk | Customer-facing clerical cadre across 11 public-sector banks. Lower cut-offs than PO, and internal promotion to officer is common. |
| SBI PO | The most competitive banking exam, and the best-paid entry officer job in the sector. |
| SBI Clerk (Junior Associate) | State Bank clerical recruitment; state-wise vacancies, so your home-state cut-off matters more than the national one. |
| SSC CGL | Graduate-level gateway to Income Tax Inspector, Excise Inspector, Assistant Audit Officer and CGA posts — the Assistant Audit Officer post is specifically commerce-friendly. |
| SSC CHSL | Only needs 12th pass, so B.Com holders clear the eligibility easily; LDC, JSA and Data Entry Operator posts. |
| RBI Grade B | The most prestigious finance job available by exam. Finance & Management paper rewards a commerce background directly. |
| RBI Assistant | Clerical cadre at the central bank; graduate with 50% marks. |
| NABARD Grade A | Rural development bank officer; the Economic & Social Issues paper suits commerce students. |
| LIC AAO | Assistant Administrative Officer in the largest insurer in India. |

How to prepare without wasting a year
Nearly every Indian competitive exam tests the same three things before it tests anything subject-specific. Build those first, because the work carries across every exam in the table above:
- Quantitative aptitude — arithmetic, data interpretation and speed. The single largest scoring section in most papers.
- Reasoning and verbal ability — logical, verbal and non-verbal reasoning.
- Current affairs and general knowledge — a daily habit, not a last-month scramble.
- Full topic-wise practice across every exam preparation section.
The honest warning: preparing for a government exam with no parallel income is the most common way graduates lose three years. Take a job or an internship, prepare in the evenings, and give yourself a defined number of attempts before you reassess.
Route 2 — Private sector jobs after B.Com
These are the roles that actually hire B.Com graduates in India, with realistic fresher salary bands. Salaries vary by city and company tier — treat the lower end as a tier-3 city or small company, and the upper end as a metro with a funded or large employer.
| Role | Fresher salary | What gets you hired |
|---|---|---|
| Accounts Executive / Accounts Assistant | ₹2.4–4.2 LPA | Tally or Zoho Books plus GST filing knowledge gets you hired fastest. |
| Audit Assistant / Articled Assistant | ₹1.8–3.6 LPA | Best route if you intend to pursue CA alongside work. |
| Tax / GST Executive | ₹2.8–4.8 LPA | Compliance work is recession-proof and consistently short of people. |
| Finance / FP&A Analyst | ₹3.5–6.5 LPA | Needs advanced Excel and, increasingly, Power BI. |
| Banking Operations Executive | ₹2.6–4.5 LPA | Private banks hire commerce graduates in volume for ops and trade finance. |
| Investment Banking Analyst (support) | ₹5–9 LPA | Tough to enter without a tier-1 college, but KPO arms in Bengaluru/Gurugram hire B.Com. |

Route 3 — Higher studies after B.Com
Another degree is worth it when it is a hard gate on the job you want — and a waste when it is a way of postponing the decision. Judge each of these by whether the role you are targeting genuinely requires it.
- CA (Chartered Accountancy) — Still the highest-return commerce qualification in India. You can register for Intermediate directly after graduation with 55% marks, skipping the Foundation exam.
- CMA / CS — Cost accounting and company-secretary tracks; both permit direct Executive-level entry for graduates.
- MBA (Finance) — Worth it from a top-50 school; below that, a specialised finance certification usually pays back faster.
- M.Com — Chiefly useful if you are targeting UGC NET, a lectureship, or a state government post that requires post-graduation.
If you are still choosing, the post-graduate entrance exams section lists what each course requires, and short online courses let you test a subject before committing years to it.
Route 4 — The skills that change your salary band
This is the highest-return route for most B.Com graduates, and the most neglected. Each of these can be learned in three to six months alongside a job or exam preparation, and each moves you into a visibly higher salary band.
- Tally Prime + GST filing — The single highest-conversion skill for an accounts role in an Indian SME.
- Advanced Excel — Lookups, pivot tables, Power Query. Most accounts interviews include a live Excel test.
- Power BI — Separates a data-literate finance graduate from a data-entry one.
- SQL — Increasingly asked of finance analysts pulling their own reports.
Work through the learning hub and course catalogue to build these, then put them on a resume that actually gets read — the free AI resume builder formats for the applicant tracking systems most Indian employers now use.
A realistic 12-month plan
| Months | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Pick one primary route and one backup. Build a proper resume with the resume builder. Apply to 20 openings a week to calibrate what the market responds to. |
| 3–5 | Start one skill from Route 4 and finish it. In parallel, register for the first exam from Route 1 whose form is open on the notifications page. |
| 6–8 | Take a job or internship even if it is below your target — income and experience both compound. Keep exam preparation to fixed evening hours. |
| 9–12 | Sit your first exam attempt. Use interview preparation before every private interview. Reassess honestly: is the primary route working, or is the backup now the better bet? |
Frequently asked questions
Which government job is best after B.Com?
For pay and career progression, IBPS PO or SBI PO. For the widest range of postings, SSC CGL — the Assistant Audit Officer and Income Tax Inspector posts are especially suited to a commerce background. If you can commit two years of serious preparation, RBI Grade B is the highest-value target available to a B.Com graduate.
Is B.Com enough to get a job?
On its own it will get you interviews for accounts-assistant and back-office roles at ₹2.4–3 LPA. Adding one practical skill — Tally with GST, or advanced Excel — typically moves the same candidate into the ₹3.5–4.5 LPA band, because employers are hiring for the software you can operate on day one.
Can I do CA after B.Com?
Yes, and it is the standard route. A B.Com graduate with 55% or more can register directly for CA Intermediate under the direct-entry scheme, skipping the Foundation exam entirely. You begin articleship after clearing one Intermediate group.
Should I do M.Com or MBA after B.Com?
Choose MBA if you want a corporate role and can get into a top-50 institute. Choose M.Com if you are aiming at UGC NET, teaching, research, or a state government post that requires a master's degree. If neither applies, a professional qualification like CA, CMA or CS returns more than either.
