Digital marketing interviews for freshers are practical. Interviewers want to know whether you understand how traffic, content and money connect, and whether you have tried anything yourself: a blog, a page you grew, a small ad campaign, or a detailed audit. Theory alone rarely gets an offer. This guide lists the questions you are most likely to hear, with short model answers, followed by the kind of practical task companies often set and how to build a portfolio that supports your answers.

SEO questions

1. What is the difference between on-page, off-page and technical SEO?

On-page covers content and page elements such as title tags, headings, internal links and keyword relevance. Off-page is mainly about backlinks and brand mentions from other sites. Technical SEO is about how search engines crawl and index the site: speed, mobile friendliness, sitemaps, canonical tags and structured data.

2. How would you pick keywords for a new page?

Start from what the audience searches, check search volume and competition in a keyword tool, look at what already ranks to understand intent, and choose one primary keyword with a few close variations. Match the page type to the intent: a guide for "how to", a listing for "jobs in Pune".

3. What is search intent?

The reason behind a search: informational (learn something), navigational (reach a specific site), commercial (compare options) or transactional (buy or apply). Content that does not match intent struggles to rank.

4. What makes a good title tag and meta description?

A title that includes the main keyword naturally and fits in the search result without being cut off; a description that summarises the page and gives a reason to click. Neither should be stuffed with keywords.

Social media questions

5. How would you plan a month of content for a brand page?

Set one goal (reach, engagement or leads), pick three or four content pillars, decide posting frequency per platform, and build a calendar with formats such as reels, carousels and stories. Review performance weekly and double down on what works.

6. What is the difference between reach and impressions?

Reach is the number of unique accounts that saw a post; impressions count total views, including repeat views by the same person.

7. Which metric matters most on social media?

It depends on the goal. Saves and shares signal useful content, comments show conversation, and link clicks or leads matter when the goal is traffic or sales. Avoid treating follower count as the only measure.

Performance marketing and paid ads

Expect at least one question that checks whether you know the basic formulas. Learn these definitions well enough to explain them with an example.

MetricMeaningFormula
CTR (click-through rate)How often people who see an ad click itClicks ÷ impressions × 100
CPC (cost per click)Average amount paid for each clickSpend ÷ clicks
CPM (cost per mille)Cost of 1,000 impressionsSpend ÷ impressions × 1,000
Conversion rateShare of clicks that complete the goalConversions ÷ clicks × 100
CPA (cost per acquisition)Cost of each conversion, such as a lead or saleSpend ÷ conversions
ROAS (return on ad spend)Revenue earned for each rupee spent on adsRevenue from ads ÷ ad spend

8. If you spend ₹10,000 and get 2,000 clicks and 50 sales worth ₹40,000, what are the CPC, CPA and ROAS?

CPC is ₹5, CPA is ₹200 and ROAS is 4 (or 4:1). Work through it aloud; interviewers like seeing the steps.

9. CTR is high but conversions are low. What could be wrong?

The ad may be promising something the landing page does not deliver, the page could be slow or confusing, the targeting may attract curious but unqualified users, or conversion tracking might be broken. Check tracking first, then the landing page.

10. What is the difference between search ads and display or social ads?

Search ads reach people actively looking for something, so intent is high. Display and social ads interrupt people while they browse, so they are better for awareness and retargeting and need strong creative.

Content and email questions

11. How do you write content that ranks and converts?

Answer the reader's question early, use clear headings, add examples and specifics, link to related pages, and include one clear next step. Write for people first, then check the basics of on-page SEO.

12. What makes an email campaign effective?

A clean, permission-based list, a subject line that is specific rather than clickbait, one main message and one call to action, mobile-friendly design, and testing of subject lines or send times over several campaigns.

Analytics questions

13. Which reports would you check first in a web analytics tool?

Traffic by channel, top landing pages, engagement on those pages, and conversions by source. Together they show where visitors come from, what they see first and which channels bring results.

14. What is a UTM parameter?

Tags added to a link (source, medium, campaign) so analytics tools can tell which campaign brought a visitor. Mention that consistent naming keeps reports clean.

15. What is attribution?

The method of assigning credit for a conversion to the touchpoints before it, such as last click, first click or data-driven models. Different models can tell very different stories about the same campaign.

The practical task

Many companies set a short assignment before or after the interview. Common versions include:

  • Audit a website's SEO and list the top five fixes in priority order.
  • Write three social posts or a reel script for a product launch.
  • Draft a small search campaign structure: ad groups, keywords, two ad variants and negative keywords.
  • Analyse a sample campaign report and suggest where to shift budget.

Keep your submission short, structured and specific. Explain the reasoning behind each recommendation, state any assumptions, and submit on time. A neat one-page answer often beats a long deck.

Your portfolio: proof behind the answers

A fresher portfolio does not need big brands. It needs evidence that you have done the work. Include what you can honestly show: a blog you run with its search performance screenshots described in text, a page you grew, content samples, a mock campaign plan, or free certifications linked to a project. Our digital marketing course and the Google certifications guide can help you build this base. Use the digital marketing resume template to present it.

Frequently asked questions

What questions are asked in a digital marketing fresher interview?

Expect questions on SEO basics, search intent, social media planning, ad metrics such as CTR, CPC, CPA and ROAS, content writing, email campaigns and analytics reports. Many companies also give a short practical task.

Do I need a certification to get a digital marketing internship?

A certification is not required, but it can help if you connect it to real work. A blog, a page you managed or a mock campaign usually carries more weight than a certificate alone.

What is ROAS in simple words?

ROAS is the revenue earned for every rupee spent on ads. If you spend ₹10,000 and the ads bring ₹40,000 in sales, the ROAS is 4.

How should I prepare for the practical task?

Practise a quick SEO audit, write a few social posts, and sketch a simple search campaign structure. Keep your answer short, explain your reasoning and state any assumptions clearly.
