Hiring Marketing Interns: What Actually Predicts Performance

Marketing has the largest gap between applicant volume and hireable quality of any early-career pool in India.

One screen closes most of that gap.

Ask for one number they moved

Any campaign, at any scale — a college fest page, a personal Instagram account, a friend's small business. What was the number before, what was it after, and what did they do in between.

Candidates who have genuinely run something answer immediately and with specifics. The shortlist shrinks fast and gets much better.

Write live, without assistance

Give a fifteen-minute writing task in the interview itself. Portfolio writing samples have become uninformative, and live writing is now the only reliable read on whether someone can actually construct an argument.

Curiosity about the product beats channel knowledge

Channel mechanics are learnable in weeks. Genuine interest in what is being sold, and in who buys it, is not — and it is what separates marketers who improve from marketers who execute.

Ask what they would change about your product. The quality of the answer is a better predictor than any tool list.

Key takeaways

  • Requiring one campaign with a real number attached shrinks the shortlist to something workable.
  • Live writing in the interview is now the only reliable read on writing ability.
  • Product curiosity predicts growth; channel knowledge is learnable in weeks.

Questions

How do we assess candidates with no formal experience?+

Personal projects count fully — a run college fest campaign, a monetised page, a friend's shop. The scale is irrelevant; the causal story is what you are testing.

Do marketing certifications matter?+

They confirm familiarity with a tool's vocabulary and little else. Weight them below any evidence of an outcome.
