Hiring Finance and Accounting Freshers in India

The deepest non-engineering pool in the country, and the one screen that actually differentiates within it.

Hiring Finance and Accounting Freshers in India

Finance is unusually credential-legible: CA intermediate, CFA Level I and MBA Finance all sort candidates for you before you start.

Which is precisely why the credentials do not differentiate. Everyone in your shortlist has them.

Model under time pressure

A timed modelling exercise is the highest-signal screen in this category and almost nobody runs one at entry level. Give them a short case and forty-five minutes; the spread in output quality is wide and immediately legible.

One wrong sign convention is the whole test. Attention to detail in finance is not a soft skill.

The three statements, out loud

Ask a candidate to explain how the three financial statements link, without notes. It is taught everywhere, so it is fair, and the quality of the explanation separates memorisation from understanding within two minutes.

Communication is the scarce half

Entry-level finance roles increasingly involve explaining numbers to people who are not finance people. Candidates who can do this are much rarer than candidates who can produce the numbers, and the ability is easy to test by asking them to explain their model to you as though you were a sales lead.

Key takeaways

  • Credentials sort the pool but do not differentiate within it.
  • A timed modelling exercise is the highest-signal screen and is rarely used at entry level.
  • Ask for the three-statement linkage out loud — it fairly separates memorisation from understanding.
  • Screen explicitly for explaining numbers to non-finance audiences.

Questions

Is CA intermediate better than an MBA Finance for entry-level roles?+

They suit different work. CA candidates arrive stronger on accounting rigour and compliance; MBA Finance candidates on commercial framing. Match the credential to the actual role rather than ranking them.

Does Tally experience still matter?+

In mid-market and SME contexts, considerably. In large-enterprise finance functions, SAP or Oracle exposure matters more, but neither is difficult to teach.
