Hire a Product Manager in India — 2026

A Product Manager decides what gets built and why, then carries responsibility for whether it worked — without authority over the people building it, which is what makes the role hard.

What a Product Manager actually does

  • Talk to users and support teams to find problems worth solving
  • Write specifications clear enough that engineering builds the right thing once
  • Prioritise ruthlessly and say no with reasons, including to senior people
  • Define success metrics before launch and report against them honestly
  • Work with design and engineering through delivery, resolving trade-offs
  • Keep stakeholders informed on scope, timing and what was dropped
  • Kill or change features that did not work rather than defending them

  • Evidence of shipped products matters most

Indicative Indian market ranges. Metro and specialist roles sit at the upper end.

What makes this hire hard

Ask what they killed, not what they launched. Product managers who can only list shipped features have usually not been accountable for outcomes. Also test written clarity — a PM who writes ambiguous specs generates rework across an entire engineering team.

Questions that separate a real candidate from a padded CV

  1. 1Tell me about a feature you decided not to build, and how you defended that.
  2. 2What did you launch that failed, and what did you learn?
  3. 3How do you prioritise when three senior people each want something different?
  4. 4Write me a one-paragraph spec for this feature right now.

A realistic Product Manager interview process

  1. 1.CV and product-portfolio screening
  2. 2.Product case or teardown exercise
  3. 3.Written spec task
  4. 4.Stakeholder and prioritisation discussion
  5. 5.Cross-functional panel round

Hiring a Product Manager — questions employers ask

Does a product manager need to be technical?

They need enough technical literacy to have credible conversations about trade-offs. Deep engineering skill is optional; being unable to reason about feasibility is not.

APM or experienced PM?

An APM works when you have senior product leadership to guide them. Without that structure, an inexperienced PM becomes a ticket-writer and the roadmap drifts.

How do we evaluate PM candidates fairly?

Use a written exercise and a real problem from your product. Interview performance rewards confident talkers; written specs and metric definitions expose actual rigour.
