What a Business Analyst actually does

  • Elicit requirements from stakeholders who often disagree with each other
  • Write specifications, user stories and acceptance criteria that remove ambiguity
  • Map current and future business processes
  • Support UAT — writing test scenarios and shepherding sign-off
  • Maintain traceability between requirements, build and testing
  • Facilitate workshops and resolve conflicting requirements
  • Support change management and user training at rollout

What makes this hire hard

Test written clarity with an actual exercise — give them a vague request and ask for acceptance criteria. Ambiguous requirements are the most expensive defect in software, and interviews reward people who talk well rather than write precisely. Domain knowledge shortens ramp-up considerably in regulated sectors.

Questions that separate a real candidate from a padded CV

  1. 1Here is a vague request from a stakeholder. Write the acceptance criteria.
  2. 2How do you handle two stakeholders who want contradictory things?
  3. 3Tell me about a requirement that was misunderstood. What went wrong?
  4. 4Which domains have you worked in?

A realistic Business Analyst interview process

  1. 1.CV and domain screening
  2. 2.Written requirements exercise
  3. 3.Stakeholder role-play or workshop simulation
  4. 4.Delivery team round
  5. 5.Manager fit

Hiring a Business Analyst — questions employers ask

Business Analyst or Product Manager?

A BA specifies what the business asked for and ensures it is built correctly; a PM decides what is worth building at all. Confusing them in a job advert attracts the wrong candidates.

Does domain experience matter?

In BFSI, healthcare and insurance, considerably — the vocabulary and regulatory constraints take months to learn. In general software, transferable analysis skill matters more.

How do we measure a BA?

Rework after sign-off, and how often engineering has to go back for clarification. Both are visible within a couple of sprints.
