Named Company Internship Programmes Interview Questions and Answers

A guide to the structured early-career programmes candidates search for by name — Google STEP, Amazon SDE, Microsoft Explore, Meta University, NVIDIA, Apple and the quant firms — what each targets, and how their processes differ.

How to use this set

Every question below is written the way an interviewer actually phrases it, followed by a model answer you could say out loud in 30–60 seconds, and — where it helps — the reason the question is asked and the trap most candidates fall into. Questions are tagged Junior, Mid or Senior so you can skip to your level.

This is one of 9 topic sets in the complete Internship Prep interview questions guide. Work through the fundamentals first, then the services your target role actually uses.

What is Google STEP and who is eligible?

Answer: STEP (Student Training in Engineering Program) is Google's internship for students early in their undergraduate degree — typically first and second years — rather than penultimate-year students. It pairs a project with structured mentoring and is aimed at broadening access to the industry.

Why interviewers ask this: Its distinguishing feature is that it targets students who would normally be considered too early. Google also runs a standard Software Engineering Internship for later-year students, so apply to whichever matches your year — applying to the wrong one is a common, avoidable rejection.

How does the Amazon SDE internship process work?

Answer: Typically an online assessment with coding problems and a work-simulation section, followed by one or two interviews mixing data structures and algorithms with leadership-principle behavioural questions.

Why interviewers ask this: Amazon weights the leadership principles genuinely — behavioural answers are scored against named principles, not treated as small talk. Preparing five detailed STAR stories mapped to principles matters as much here as the coding practice.

What is the Microsoft Explore programme?

Answer: Explore is a rotational internship for first and second year undergraduates that rotates participants through software engineering and product management, so they can see both before specialising.

Why interviewers ask this: Like Google STEP, it is aimed at early-year students. Microsoft separately runs standard software engineering internships for later years, and the two have different application forms and timelines.

4

What is Meta University?

Answer: Meta University is a paid training-plus-internship programme for students from underrepresented backgrounds, typically after their first or second year, covering tracks including engineering, product design and data science.

Why interviewers ask this: It combines instruction with a real project, so it suits candidates with less prior industry exposure. Meta also runs conventional software engineering internships for penultimate-year students.

5
Mid level

What do NVIDIA early-talent internships look for?

Answer: NVIDIA hires interns across deep learning research, GPU and systems software, and silicon engineering. Depending on the team, expect strong C++ or CUDA, parallel programming knowledge, or genuine ML research depth.

Why interviewers ask this: Their roles are unusually team-specific, so match your application to the team rather than applying generically. For GPU software the differentiator is understanding memory hierarchy and parallelism; for research it is publications or reproducible project work.

How do quant firm internships like Jane Street, Citadel or HRT differ?

Answer: They run shorter, extremely selective processes weighted toward probability, mental maths, market-making games and — for developer roles — deep C++ and systems knowledge. They also typically pay well above standard tech internships.

Why interviewers ask this: Their timelines are early, often opening a full year ahead, and pipelines close quickly. Preparation is genuinely different from software interviews; see the quant and trading interview guide for the specific ground to cover.

Do these named programmes hire in India?

Answer: Some do and some do not. Several of these programmes are region-specific, while the same companies run separate India-based internship pipelines through their India engineering centres and campus processes.

Why interviewers ask this: Always check the location and eligibility on the official posting rather than assuming a programme is global. Applying to a role you are not eligible for consumes an application slot and is rejected automatically at some companies.

When do these large-company internship applications open?

Answer: The largest US technology employers open Summer internship applications unusually early — many between July and September of the preceding year — and fill on a rolling basis. Indian pipelines and campus placement processes typically run from August through January.

Why interviewers ask this: Rolling review matters more than the closing date: an application submitted in week one is reviewed against a nearly empty pipeline, and the same application in month four competes against thousands. Apply the week a posting opens.

Do I need a referral for these programmes?

Answer: No — the large structured programmes hire substantially through direct applications and campus channels. A referral can help your resume get seen at some companies, but no referral is required and none guarantees an interview.

Why interviewers ask this: Be wary of anyone selling guaranteed referrals or interview slots for these programmes; that is a common scam targeting students, and companies do not sell access to their pipelines.

10
Junior level

What is the realistic acceptance rate for these programmes?

Answer: Very low — commonly well under a few percent, and lower still for the named early-career programmes and quant firms, which receive tens of thousands of applications for a few hundred seats.

Why interviewers ask this: This is the argument for a broad portfolio. Candidates who apply only to a handful of famous programmes frequently end a season with nothing, while similar candidates who also applied to strong mid-size and startup employers get excellent experience — which is what makes the next cycle easier.

Are Indian product companies and startups a weaker option?

Answer: No. Indian product companies, unicorns and funded startups often give interns far more ownership and shipping experience than a large-company internship, precisely because teams are smaller and the work is less scoped.

Why interviewers ask this: For a first internship, what most improves your next application is having shipped something real and being able to discuss the decisions. A startup internship where you owned a feature end to end frequently interviews better than a large-company internship spent on a narrow, well-insulated task.
