The Skills Gap in Indian Engineering Graduates — A Hiring View

Employability statistics about Indian engineering graduates circulate widely and are usually wrong in both directions — too pessimistic in aggregate, too complacent about specifics.

From a hiring seat, the gap is concentrated rather than general.

Where the gap is real

Three areas recur. Version control and collaborative workflow, which are rarely taught and always needed. Testing, which is almost never taught. And writing — the ability to explain a technical decision in prose, which is the single most under-developed skill in the cohort.

Where the commentary overstates it

Core problem-solving ability is not the gap it is often described as. Candidates who struggle in interviews frequently struggle with the interview format rather than with the underlying reasoning, which is a screening design issue as much as a candidate one.

All three gaps close in weeks

Git, testing and technical writing are all learnable quickly by a motivated graduate with a mentor. Treating them as disqualifying at screening excludes candidates for deficiencies your onboarding could close in a month.

What to screen for instead

Learning velocity. Ask about something they taught themselves recently and how they went about it. In a market where the specific skill demanded changes every few years, this is the attribute with the longest shelf life.

Key takeaways

  • The real gaps are concentrated: version control, testing and technical writing.
  • Problem-solving weakness is often interview-format weakness, which is a screening design issue.
  • All three real gaps close within weeks of structured onboarding.
  • Screen for learning velocity — it has the longest shelf life of any attribute.

Questions

Should we require internship experience?+

It correlates with workflow familiarity but excludes strong candidates from institutions with weak placement infrastructure. Screen for the underlying skills instead.

How long until a graduate hire is productive?+

With structured onboarding and a mentor, months rather than a year for most roles. Without either, considerably longer — the variable is largely on your side.
