A Frontend Developer builds the part of the product users actually touch — and carries responsibility for it staying fast and usable on mid-range Android phones and patchy networks, not just a developer laptop.
Indicative Indian market ranges. Metro and specialist roles sit at the upper end.
Ask for live URLs, not screenshots, and open them on a throttled connection during the interview — front-end quality is visible in seconds and CVs hide it completely. Many candidates know React well but have never thought about bundle size or a mid-range device, which is where Indian traffic actually lives.
Less than it seems. A strong developer moves between them in weeks. Hire for JavaScript depth, browser understanding and craft; treat the framework as a preference unless your codebase is very large.
Attention to states nobody specified — loading, empty, error, long content, slow network. Anyone can build the happy path; the rest is what users actually hit.
They should be able to argue with a design constructively and spot what will break with real content. Full design skill is a bonus, not a requirement.
