Hire a CNC Operator in India — 2026

A CNC Operator sets and runs computer-controlled machines to produce parts within tolerance — where setup skill and in-process measurement separate a good operator from an expensive scrap generator.

What a CNC Operator actually does

  • Set up CNC machines — tooling, work holding, offsets and zero setting
  • Load and edit programs, and run first-piece approval before production
  • Measure parts in process with verniers, micrometers and gauges
  • Monitor tool wear and change inserts before quality drifts
  • Maintain output and quality to the shift plan
  • Perform daily machine cleaning and basic preventive checks
  • Report machine problems and dimensional deviations promptly

What makes this hire hard

Test on the machine, not on paper. Ask them to set up a job and measure the first piece; setup and measurement discipline are what determine scrap rates, and both are visible within thirty minutes. Distinguish operators from setters — the pay and capability gap is significant.

Questions that separate a real candidate from a padded CV

  1. 1Set up this job and show me your first-piece measurement.
  2. 2How do you know when to change an insert?
  3. 3Can you edit a program, or only run one?
  4. 4Which controls have you worked on — Fanuc, Siemens?

A realistic CNC Operator interview process

  1. 1.Skill and experience screening
  2. 2.Practical machine setup test
  3. 3.Measurement and drawing reading check
  4. 4.Supervisor round
  5. 5.Reference check

Hiring a CNC Operator — questions employers ask

Operator or setter — what is the difference?

An operator runs an already-set machine; a setter does tooling, offsets and first-piece approval. Setters command materially higher pay and are much harder to find.

Does control brand matter?

Somewhat. Fanuc and Siemens differ in interface and program handling, but an experienced machinist adapts within days if the underlying machining knowledge is sound.

How do we reduce scrap?

Hire for measurement discipline and give operators authority to stop. Most scrap comes from running past a known drift because stopping was discouraged.
